While the Montreal offence did it's part, One has to wonder if Carey Price can bounce back from a sub-par performance in the Shark Tank. Final score: San José 6, Montreal 4
Had it not been for 2 specific goals scored on Carey Price, perhaps the Canadiens could have come out of San José with at least 1 point.
The first of the goals to which I allude, happened to be the Shark's second of the game where Brian Smolinski should have been charged with goaltender interference. The problem was that it was on his own goalie...Price had been tripped to the ice by his forward who was battling with a shark attacker and stayed down on the ice, flat on his back waiting for a call... meanwhile the puck ends up behind the net where a waiting Scott Thronton plays a little bumper pool and banks it in off an "I've fallen and I can't get up" Carey Price.
The Habs offence did not lose faith...yet...Thomas Plekanec scored his 25th of the season and rookie Ryan Obyrne potted his 1st in the majors to tie the game at 2. The two teams then traded goals in the second period and all seemed destined for a tight 3rd period where anything could happen... Until the illustrious sniper known as Jody Shelley threw the puck towards Price from the blue line and much to everyone's surprise, especially Shelley, he scores !
For those of you unaccustomed to my sense of humor, that last bit is my attempt at sarcasm. Shelley has 1 goal in 46 games, make that 12 goals in the NHL since 2000... Ok, so every dog must have his day, but did we have to make him breakfast in bed too? It looked as though the puck was heading wide of the net, yet Price tried to snag it and it caromed off his body and went to the back of the net..
This last goal was the proverbial straw that broke the Carbo's back. The rest is history, of course.
3 minutes into the 3rd, the Sharks score to make it 5-3 and even though the habs tried valliantly to come back, the game ended 6-4 on a night that maybe, just maybe, we should have thrown Jaroslav Halak a bone and sent him into the 3rd, fresh and ready to please. I'm noticing that I have made a few references to the canine species...maybe because I'm so dog tired from having stayed up till past 1AM to catch the action first hand..oops, did it again...
To the surprise of many, Carbo has decided to go with Price when they take on the Coyotes on Thursday. This move could make carbo look like a genius or give all pundits a chance to tell him they told him so.
While I believe that Price has to be better more often and let his team-mates that he has his part of the ice under control, I also believe that when you fall off the bike, you gotta get back on... there are no more conditioning and confidence boosting stints in Hamilton to fall back on. There is no more reassurance that if he has a bad game, we can put in our other, experienced goalie...we traded him for a 2nd round draft pick. Like it or not, he is now our number 1.
As Captain Picard would always say to Commander Riker : Engage, number 1, Engage !
