Three games were played in the NHL playoffs on Wednesday night seeing the Sens get eliminated, the Rangers inching closer to doing the same to the Devils and what about those Nashville Predators!? Are they on their way to pulling off the upset of the playoffs? Read on to get my take on these games as well as how my predictions stack up to the unfolding events in the NHL.
Penguins 3 vs Senators 1 (Pit wins serie 4-0)
I had predicted the Pens in 6. Who would have thought that they would have been this bad? They even had to rush captain Daniel Alfredsson back from an injury as the over inflated egos of the so-called stars on the team couldn't produce enough firepower to even compete with the Penguins. Taking nothing away from the Penguins, they have to realize that they did not have to play great in order to beat this Sens team that is a shadow of it's former self. I predict many, not some changes in Ottawa this spring, from the top down. Their next opponent will be alot more competitive and demanding on both the Pens' suspect defence as well as the steady of late Marc-André Fleury.
Devils 3 vs Rangers 5 (NYR lead 3-1)
I believe you can count the Drury and Gomez acquisitions as good ones as both figured prominently in yesterday's victory over the Devils. Drury had two goals and Gomez produced a goal and an assist, but the real story was the zero the hero story of Marc Staal, who scored the game winning goal in this game after having the game losing goal go in off his skate the previous game. I predicted the Rangers in 6, but you have to winder if the Devils are not fed up of being manhandled, out-scored, out-played and over antagonized to the point that subconsciously, they might be ready to pack it in. the only thing they may have going their way is the fact that the next game is at home. If they win that one, anything is possible. New Jersey has come back from a 3-1 deficit before, doing it to Philadelphia in the 2000 Eastern Conference finals.
Redwings 2 vs Predators 3 (series tied at 2)
If you are looking for momentum, Nashville's got tons to spare. This team not only scored 2 quick goals in the 1st period, but managed to never let up even when the redwings tried to mount a comeback in the 2nd period, scoring 11 seconds after Detroit potted its first to make the score 3-1 at this point. The Redwings scored early in the 3rd but Dan Ellis stopped the other 11 shots he faced and now it is down to a best of 3 series. I predicted Detroit in six. If they do their soul searching and all the other clichés in the book like looking at themselves in the mirror and taking it one game at a time, and win in Nashville, they will surely want to put it away coming back home for game 6. If only to satisfy my playoff prediction.
